Amsterdam: Our Last Days

“If you look out to the left you will see a kiwi brothel.” The coach driver said as we passed a field of sheep.

So you might have noticed I haven’t posted about our last day in Amsterdam, which was also the last day of our Contiki tour. I kept putting it off as I got stuck with an awful cough and have spent most of the last few weeks in bed.

The morning began at the Anne Frank museum where we waited an hour and a half to get into the museum. However, it was lucky we got there when we did as the line only seemed to get longer. Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who wrote about her time, hiding in rooms that could only be accessed from behind a bookshelf. The museum is in fact inside these rooms. In order to access them, you do have to walk past the original bookshelf and up steep staircases. The family couldn’t make any noise in their hidden rooms, which meant no running water. Anne’s family was eventually betrayed and sent to concentration camps. One of the things that touched me the most, was a video of Anne’s boyfriend who talked about what she was like as a young girl and how awful it had been not knowing what had happened to Anne after he discovered she was no longer in her home.

From Anne Franks house I met up with two friends I’d met at university. Together we made our way to the sex museum. Inside the museum, we were treated to numerous displays of items from the ages with pornographic images printed on them. Of course, who doesn’t need a dinner set covered in naked men and women? In one section, were plastic molds of peoples bottoms on the wall, one of which would make the noise of its people every 30 seconds or so and flutter its eyelids… I have to say, it’s not what I expected, after the museum in Prague, but it did have the fanciest toilet I think I’ve ever seen.

I had to go back to the hostel to get changed, where we indulged in space cakes and went back into town. When we got back on the coach, my fellow idiot looked at me and mumbled, “I feel one with the bus.” I was given the task of finding more space cakes but by the time we made our way to dinner, the first round of space cakes had taken effect and we were giggling hysterically over our noodles. Needless to say, we gave away round two to some of the other Contikiers.

The next morning we said Goodbye to some of our Contiki family and drove on back to London. We stopped in Belgium at a service station, giving me enough time to buy some Belgian chocolate in Belgium.

My fellow idiot and I spent one last night in London, before she headed home to Australia and I flew back to Ireland, to stay with my grandparents, for a few weeks before I start working with Contiki. I’m sure you’ll hear all about it in the next blog. But for now, Happy travelling!
